It is a crucial part of wine making and drinking to understand the wine classifieds and categorization. But before you can continue your journey you have to know the fundamentals of exactly what wine is.

Grape Varieties

Even though it is Vitis Vinifera, also known at the common grape vine that's the dominant variety used in making wines, different wines are produced from different grape varieties. It's native to Europe together with Central and East Asia, but it has been planted throughout the world.

Hybrid Grapes

Hybrids were manufactured by crossing the tough American grape that can withstand the cold with the more sensitive European vinifera; their purpose was to develop a grape with increased infection weight, stronger plants and, most of all, tolerance to the cold winters.

Vinification

Vinification describes the way the wine is manufactured. Types of classifications by vinification method include sparkling, flower, or impression. Like, wine is a sparkling wine. Sparkling wines are wines which include carbon dioxide, which may sometimes be considered a by-product of the fermentation, or may be added.

Region

This is where the grapes are grown and the wine is created. Champagne is only grown in the Champagne region of France and Port is the only wine grown in a certain valley in Portugal.



Type

Most countries which are not of Europe classify their wines from the type of grape used.

Aperitif or aperitif wines: herb or spiced wines served before meals

Dessert wines: special wines, frequently fortified

Place wines: special fruity largely cheaper wines
